“We need to understand that wellness is not something that is permanent but is an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence.”
- The National Wellness Institute. NWI, 2018a
Most people believe that being healthy is just a state of being free of a chronic disease, such as diabetes, obesity, hypertension, stroke, etc. But did you ever think about your overall wellness? Do you feel happy and satisfied with your entire self - mind, body, and emotions? It is very important to understand how we feel about ourselves because that determines what choices we make about our health.
For example, if you are experiencing stress, anxiety, or depression, you might be sidetracked from reaching your health goals because negative moods trigger maladaptive coping behaviors, like being sedentary, overeating, smoking, lack of sleep, substance abuse, etc. However, making these changes is difficult because our emotional challenges can be a major barrier to making needed physical changes.
Health coaching is effective. Should you try it?
What is Health Coaching?
Just as a sports coach can help an athlete develop and excel at a sport, a health and wellness coach can help anyone excel at living their life, even — or especially — if they have chronic medical conditions. The coaching process is similar to talk therapy in that it involves two people discussing ideas and issues, but it is different in that the person who is being coached is in the driver’s seat, creating their goals as well as the strategies on how to arrive at these goals.
People tend to hire health coaches to help them with a broad variety of health issues, such as weight loss, stress reduction, the management of chronic conditions, improving diet and exercise, tobacco cessation, addiction, and adjusting to a life-altering health event, like a heart attack. There is overlap between what a health coach does and what a life coach does, but a life coach’s domain is much broader, and includes career issues, executive coaching, and professional effectiveness.
You are not alone in this journey.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that an estimated six in ten adults in the United States have at least one chronic health condition such a heart disease, cancer, hypertension, diabetes, chronic lung diseases, stroke, and obesity, and four in ten adults have two or more chronic health conditions.
The question is whether we can prevent, reverse, or delay a chronic condition. And of course you can! Most of those diseases are caused by our lifestyle or risk behaviors like tobacco use, poor nutrition, lack of physical activity, excessive alcohol use, or unsatisfactory sleep. The good news is that those risk behaviors are modifiable, and with encouragement and guidance, you are capable of making choices that improve your overall quality of life.
As a health and wellness coach, I will facilitate your journey to wellness. I will be your partner through every step toward your goals. I will respect your values, support your self-discovery, and provide a non-judgmental environment where you feel supported as you identify your own strengths and motivations to change. I will not give you advice, but instead will recommend a plan based on your desired actions towards your health and well-being.

“Jenny is an incredible Health Coach. I got to know Jenny through my gym where I worked out regularly. I started a conversation with her about my overall goals: Improved overall health - diet, exercise and wellness. Her coaching has allowed me to significantly exceed my wildest health goals. I eat better, exercise regularly and reached my weight loss goals much faster than I had imagined. My annual physical exam clearly shows the big benefits of following her coaching. In fact, my focus on wellness has just become my habit! Jenny has been transformational for my wellbeing. I feel so much better about myself and my health since I started talking to her. Thank you Jenny for all that you are doing for me!”

“I have worked with Jenny for several years. I have been dealing with knee and foot injuries as well as with carpal tunnel syndrome, and Jenny was able to devise exercise programs that kept me moving and progressing while healing. Her dedication to excellence in her own fitness program and her understanding of the importance of exercise in daily life is inspiring. In addition to being a very knowledgeable trainer, Jenny is an empathetic person who is able to motivate and inspire people to reach their exercise goals. It’s always a joy to spend time with Jenny!”

“Choosing Jenny as my trainer and health coach instructor was the BEST decision I made when preparing myself to join the Air Force. My main goal prior to beginning basic training was to meet the weight standard required by all recruits. Not only was Jenny able to help me accomplish this, she would instill in me the mental toughness required to endure any obstacles encountered during basic training. I didn’t want someone to just hand me a list of workouts to do. Instead, Jenny was able to meticulously explain to me the purpose of each workout and the effects they would have on me both physically and mentally. I was shocked with how much my body was able to endure and excel during the three months of basic training. Meeting a set weight goal can be accomplished with the help of any trainer. Building mental fortitude and discovering inner strength while maintaining that physical goal is rare. Only with Jenny, was I able to accomplish this. Thank you Jenny!”
